This movie trailer is for an upcoming film called The Crazies. It's a remake of an older one. The first thirty minutes are intriguing, but then it all goes to shit. A very neat little concept, a virus of insanity, kind of touched on in The Happening, but it could make for a fun film.

Except as you see about 30 seconds into the trailer, 'madness' apparently is exactly the same as zombification. Fuck, seriously? Another zombie movie?

But they missed something big.

The reason why we love the general post-apocalypse stuff, and especially zombie horror is because it's a far more natural state for us. Our instincts are simple. Power is awarded to the dominant, you live to fuck, you take anything you can, and you use violence to solve problems.

Literally, that is cave age life, and very relevant only in such a setting. The truth is nearly the polar opposite for us.

We live in an overpopulated world, and even if we took a moratorium on breeding for a few years, we'd still not be in 'danger' of losing the species, not be a longshot. I think the reason we see so many virus/zombie movies instead of ones about a post-nuclear war one is they're more believable. Even if the former USSR states and the west exchanged the atomic hellfire tonight, Africa, Oceana, the Middle East, South America and the Indian Subcontinent would still suffer from an excess of people. Too many mouths to feed, even if the scant billion 'civilized' people in the world were vaporized. Maybe even worse off once the aid stopped. These same poor starving and plentiful people would be very convincingly infected however.

We live in a world of junk. This is a big one. Our instincts as tool using primates gravitate towards finding uses for what we find. This kind of resource management is actually one of the big selling points of games like Fallout. It appeals to our reward system to consider ourselves crafty enough to find the value in objects, find rarity. This is pretty much a shot concept if you ever visit the Chinese discount store crammed into a corner of a farmer's market. Knowing whether a cookie sheet is steel or aluminum will make virtually no difference in your life, and the only value any object has is in an abstract variable that's influenced by things unrelated to the usefulness of said object. In our world it is far better to see the shortcomings of every product offered than find the hidden value of them.

I could go on about the power sharing differences, or the use of violence as a means, but you can read far better pontifications on Cracked about that.

I think the junking, and the fucking is the main thing though. Take away an actual need to breed breed breed and scavenge things like a packrat... and well, I guess we get a little lost as a species.

Is that actually a 128 card that's just getting 27 megs eaten away for something trivial, or is there a slider setting somewhere for that? I spent a good ten minutes in the BIOS, and it proved fruitless because that's either not shared memory, or it is and just not accessable. Unless I'm being an idiot and their is an option somewhere in the control panel. If this laptop has anything in excess, Lord knows it's memory.
